Amrita debut was with her son Raj Babbar is, Arya Babbar in Ab Ke Baras, released in 2002, followed by a brief appearance in The Legend of Bhagat Singh. She shot to fame in 2003 with the release of Ishq Vishq with Shahid Kapoor and earned him a nomination for Filmfare Best Debut for her role as an impact-cupid Payal Mehra.
In 2004 she was part of a multi-starrer Main Hoon Na with Shahrukh Khan, Zayed Khan, Sushmita Sen and was nominated for the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. Her films in 2005, Vaah! Life Ho Tho Aisi and Shikhar not a good reception at the box office. Vivah in 2006, with Shahid Kapoor was one of the biggest commercial successes of the year.
Bollywood Amrita Rao did not see much in 2007, except for a brief appearance in song Heyy Babyy. It is a Telugu film Athidhi with Mahesh Babu, who is a great success in the south.
Releases include 2008's My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves with Mithun Chakraborthy, Liles Dubey and Nikhil Dwivedi, who do not do well. Her performance as Kamala Shyam Benegal comedy Welcome to Sajjanpur is praised and the film has received rave reviews.
In 2009, she was seen opposite Harman Baweja in victory, not so much a winner at the box office. She exchanged her sweet image for a more glamorous Shortkut: The Con is one. But even that film did not do well.
Fans can expect to see Hook Ya Crook Rao (2010) with John Abraham and Genelia D'Souza, Kunal and Avadana (2010) with Amitabh Bachchan and Arjun Rampal.
